A birthday is not one candle photo. It is anticipation, noise, faces leaning into the same small circle of light, and the room after everyone has moved away.
Photograph the build-up
Start before the guest of honor is in position. Wrapping paper, hands carrying plates, somebody lighting the candles, and the half-hidden cake create expectation.

- One person waiting or arriving
Stay with the faces
During the song, take fewer pictures and look for reactions around the cake. The person laughing at the edge of the frame may become the photograph everyone keeps.
Do not ask the whole room to pose again. The uneven, overlapping version is usually the real one.
Keep one aftermath frame
A sliced cake, confetti on the floor, sleepy children, or two people talking after the crowd thins makes a strong final image. Celebration stories need a soft landing.
